History
AFP advanced food products llc can trace it’s history back to 1925 when a group of Amish farmers built a small cheese plant in New Holland, PA. A few short months later, Meyer Zausner, an experienced manager of dairy plants, purchased the plant and expanded the varieties of cheese to include Limburger, Colby and Muenster.
A chronological history of AFP Operations follows:
1940
The New Holland Plant was expanded to include manufacturing facilities for making powdered milk, condensed milk and cream as a by-product.
Sol Zausner, son of Meyer Zausner took over upon the death of his father. The product mix was changed and dairy product brokerage was added.
1963
The Company went public and invested in an aseptic milk processing and packaging system.
1965
A disastrous fire razed the New Holland facility. Designed and constructed a new and expanded cheese processing facility.
1967
Merger of Tuxedo Foods Company with Zausner Foods Corp. resulted in bringing many private label cottage cheese customers.
1972
Growing interest in aseptically canned puddings in individual serving cans.
1973
Developed an entirely new aseptic package. Merger between Zausner Foods Corp., and East Smithfield Farms resulted in the cream cheese operation doubling.
1978
Zausner Foods Corp. was sold to a French Corporation, Groupe Bongrain S.A. The New Holland plant was extensively renovated, cream cheese operations and aseptic operations greatly expanded. Production of cottage cheese was discontinued.
1983
The aseptic and cheese departments were separated into two operating divisions of Zausner Foods, known as Major Smith, and Fleur de Lait Foods, dividing pudding and cheese production.
1988
Bongrain bought Real Fresh, Inc. from the Graves family in California. The acquisition included the Visalia Facility. Real Fresh® was a pioneer and leader in aseptic packaging, starting in 1952 and producing the first milk product in sterilized can that was truly shelf stable. During these years Major Smith, Inc. was producing pudding in #10 and 9oz. cans, as well as single serve snack cups.
1992
The RTD beverage line started producing weight management drinks, gradually diversifying into coffee products and nutritional beverages. The Form/Fill/Seal pouch line was installed to produce cheese sauce in flexible pouches.
Major Smith and Real Fresh in Visalia, CA were consolidated into the Aseptic Food Group to create a competitive advantage and more business opportunities.
2001
Bongrain SA and Land O'Lakes combined their activities as a joint venture in North America related to aseptic products to form AFP advanced food products llc. Products include cheese sauces, beverages and puddings. This change yielded a joint venture in which Bongrain SA has controlling interests. The capability for dispenser pouch business was added, as well as upgrades to the new Tetra line and Hassia line. These investments gave AFP more aseptic packaging capabilities than any other aseptic food company in the industry.
2002
Capital investment was made to increase #10 process system capacity at the Clear Lake Facility.
2003
Capital investment made to increase the hot fill rate at the Clear Lake Facility.
2006
Capital investment to install Form/Fill/Seal pouch machine in Clear Lake Facility.
2007
New Flavor Ingredient line added to Clear Lake Facility.
2009
Our reputation for convenience, service and outstanding qualities have resulted in strong sales growth over the past 10 years. With nearly 500 employees and a total shipping volume of 150,000 tons per year, we have the size and experience to meet any need.

Aseptic Packaging
Aseptic packaging is a beverage and food system widely used in Europe and Asia for several decades and introduced in the United States in the early 1980’s. This remarkable packaging system allows products once considered perishable to be distributed and stored without refrigeration for periods up to six months or more, even delicate foods such as milk, soy beverages, cheese sauces and puddings, dips, spreads and more.
The aseptic packaging system achieves this room temperature shelf stability by filling a sterilized package with a sterile food product within the confines of a sterile environment. Most other packaging types and systems use preservatives and/or refrigeration to achieve a long shelf life.
Whether products are packaged as our brands or your own, they'll keep your customers coming back for more.
